The Fast-Food Giant Takes Down Artificial Intelligence Christmas Ad Following Backlash.
McDonald's has removed a holiday advertisement produced via AI following encountering widespread online backlash.
The brief spot was produced with the help of generative AI clips and was originally released online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.
Audience Reaction and Decision to Pull
Shortly after its release, commenters denounced the use of AI in the commercial. A number of labeled it "disturbing" and "poorly edited".
"This moment serves as an valuable learning as we explore the proper utilization of generative technology," stated a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.
The advert was created for McDonald's by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of situations that might go awry over the Christmas break, with the theme "the most terrible time of the year".
The Trend of AI-Generated Ads
Commercials that include generative AI have become a growing phenomenon among prominent companies, notably for the Christmas campaign season.
- Coca-Cola has also released consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
- Inherent Limitations: As videos produced with generative AI are more likely to distort the longer they run, most such clips tend to be about a few seconds in length.
- Industry Concerns: The video also provoked worries about job displacement in the production industry, with some commenters stating it might affect opportunities for actors.
Response from the Creators
After the video's removal, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.
According to her, the creation required "seven weeks" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then shaped afterward "just as we would on any standard production".
"This wasn't an experiment," she commented. "The result was a proper commercial."
Mixed Public Reception
While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was largely criticized, the sentiment for other AI-generated campaigns has been more mixed.
For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas spot from another major brand according to analysis garnered a 61% "favorable response" from the public.
However, several companies have likewise received criticism for using the technique in marketing. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that critics described as "low-effort" and "disturbing".
The episode illustrates the evolving debate within the advertising and production industries about the balance between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
