Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state preliminary tests show the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they stated.
City officials said they were trying "to solve the case" and have requested to the residents for information.
A high-ranking representative commented the incident made him stunned and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a assailant aiming at residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
